GRAMVOUSA

Northwest of Kissamos, next to the cape of Gramvousa, there are two uninhabited islands, tame and wild Gramvousa. Tame Gramvousa is known for its stunning beach, it’s shipwreck and castle, which stands at 137 m tall and was built between 1579-84 by the Venetians.

Later on, the castle was surrendered to the Turks, however after much effort it was reclaimed by the Cretans, making it the first part of Crete and one of the first in Greece to be freed from Turkish domination. Due to the adverse circumstances that surrounded that era, the Cretans were driven to piracy, making this island know to the whole of Europe as “The Isle of Pirates”. Legend has it that a grand treasure is still hidden in that area from that period.

Aside from navigating the castle and visiting the shipwreck, visitors can swim in the beach’s turquoise waters which has both sand and pebbles , depending on the location they choose. The general surrounding area is part of the protection program, Natura 2000.

BALOS

The Balos Lagoon is located between the cape of Gramvousa and and the cape of Tigani. With its pink sand and turquoise waters, it’s an exotic destination, and it is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Its shallow and warm waters make it an ideal destination for families with small children, while the surrounding sea close to Tigani, gives you the opportunity to scuba dive. In many places, the sand has a beautiful pink hue to it, which comes from shattered seashells. Like its surrounding areas, Balos is also part of the Natura 2000 protection program for its flora and fauna.

MENIES

Menies is located in the Northeast end of the cape of Spatha, and according to archeologists, the ancient city of Diktinna was located in its place.

As a matter of fact, you can still see some ruins of its ancient temple from that period. It is a secluded, pebble beach with deep, blue waters, ideal for exploring its sea bed with a mask. As it is not affected by the winds in the area, it’s an ideal destination to relax at.

FALASARNA

Falasarna is one of the most beautiful destinations of Crete, with its light blue water and sand, and stunning sunset. It’s been listed in the Natura 2000 program not only due to the diversity of its flora and fauna, but also for its natural beauty.

It is one of the most popular beaches of Greece, and has been awarded as the best beach of Crete, as well as one of the Top 10 in Europe, in the past. It spans through a very large area, and consists of essentially 5 consecutive beaches, with the two central ones being the most loved.  In the northern part of the beach one can find ruins of the ancient Greco-Roman city of Falasarna.

ELAFONISI

Elafonisi is located southwest of Chania. It’s essentially a Cretan peninsula which due to its shape gives the illusion of an island.

It is said that it used to be a pirate lair back in the day, and according to locals the name doesn’t mean “Isle of the deer”, as there have never been deer in this area, but rather takes its name from the pirate loot that was often hidden there. It has similarly been included to the Natura 2000 circuit of protection as it has an ecosystem of great ecological value.

The turquoise waters and white sand which has pink hues throughout due to the shattered seashells, make this beach seems like an exotic destination as well. The waters from where the “island” seemingly begins do not surpass half a meter in depth and create a small lagoon with warm water which is ideal for children. A walk on and around the island is worth it, as the beaches are more quiet and secluded, while on the edge of the island you can find a lighthouse, the chapel of Agia Irini, which offers an endless view of the open sea.
